Our Gay Friendly Wedding Venue In Cornwall

Hi Janie

Sorry, it’s taken a while. Please use what you want out of it Sophie wanted to write this so here it is …..pictures will follow.

Lower Barns is so much more than just a wedding venue to us. It’s a place like nothing I’ve seen anywhere before and as soon as we saw it we both knew it was everything we wanted our special day to be. A perfect reflection of us so, I’ll start by telling you a bit about us (and Daisy dog)……

Much to my shock and surprise we got engaged on 2nd December last year at Mentmore Falconry in Long Marston when Flynn the barn owl delivered the most beautiful engagement ring. I don’t quite know how Sarah managed to keep it a secret, she’d been driving around with it in the boot of her car for months!  It was the most fantastic day and experience having our close friends with us, meeting all the birds and of course Flynn flying to me with the ring.

She also surprised me with a night in a 5-star luxury hotel, which as it turned out, wasn’t at all welcoming to same-sex couples and made us feel very uncomfortable and we ended up staying in our room all night.  So……..we started searching for a gay-friendly venue ABROAD!!!  We just wanted to be treated like any other couple on their engagement.  So you can imagine the place we wanted to get married had to be accepting and make us feel welcome. Anyone who knows my wife knows she always has to have things done right. A few weeks passed and we had decided Hawaii was the place, then by chance it seemed we came across the Lower Barns site, I still don’t know how. We spoke with Janie via email at first as you never know what response you are going to get when people find out you are gay. After talking for days by email we eventually spoke on the phone. Everything just went so smoothly, the booking, what we wanted on the day, the accommodation for all our friends, It was all just so easy we thought we better go and see where we are getting married! When we went to take a look we both knew it was just meant to be, it felt like we were visiting family.  Everyone including Daisy dog was welcome.

I’d describe Lower Barns as bursting with colour even on the most dreary of British days.  Our Venezuelan friends were delighted and said that it was ‘just like home.’ I’m sure they took photos of absolutely everything!  Janie and Mike have made the place their life’s work and it really does show, they have thought of everything!  It’s dog-friendly,  it caters for disabled clients and even includes a separate suite that has an upstairs that caters for carers if needed. They have thought of everything. They will always have a special place in our hearts. Nothing was too much trouble on the day, it was really just like our home from home. Looking back there’s nothing that I would change. I’m sure we’ll be back to relive a day that I never wanted to end.

A special thanks to Emma Carlyle (hair), Juliet Gould (Flowers) and Suzi Winter (Makeup)
