Planning to enjoy your wedding festivities over a couple of days? Why not! Here are some lovely ideas, close to Lower Barns, on the south coast of Cornwall, to keep you and your guests easily and happily entertained.
Wander around The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Just a mile up the road from us you’ll find The Lost Gardens of Heligan: 200 acres of typically 19th century Gardenesque style grounds. Just 25 years ago, the gardens were forgotten, buried under a tangle of weeds. A chance discovery led to the discovery of the gardens, which then saw them restored to their former glory. Today they boast colossal rhododendrons and camellias, a series of lakes, a vegetable garden and a beautiful wild area with subtropical tree ferns. It’s also home to Europe’s only remaining pineapple pit! Dogs on leads are welcome at Heligan and the food in the cafe is an absolute treat.
Go sea glass hunting at Pentewan beach
We’re only 2 miles from the gorgeous east-facing sandy beach of Pentewan. With over half a mile to explore, there is plenty of sea glass, driftwood and other beachy finds to loot! If the sun’s out, this is a great beach for swimming, or why not hire a sea canoe? The cute village of Pentewan is only 500m from the beach, where you’ll find toilets, café and free parking.
Walk the coastal path
Walkers are in for a treat: we’re flanked by the Polperro Heritage Coast on one side and the Roseland Heritage Coast on the other. The coastline is stunning here, with plenty of interesting coves, quirky villages and beautiful sandy beaches to boot. Pack a picnic and plan a walk for your group. Pick a pub to incentivise the stragglers.
Banquet on the beach
Carlyon Bay hosts all sorts of events over the summer and is just a 20-minute drive up the road. Wine aficionados will love the wine tasting evenings and foodies will be in heaven at one of the famous beach banquets. There are also open air theatre and cinema evenings for those after a spot of beachside culture.
Enjoy the hustle and bustle of Mevagissey
Once the centre of Cornwall’s pilchard fishery, Mevagissey still boasts a working harbour (not to mention all that tasty fresh fish)! The quaint town is also a popular spot for holidaymakers, giving the town a lovely hustle and bustle vibe, especially through the summer months. Swing by and check out the craft workshops, galleries, gift shops and cafes. There’s also a museum and an aquarium, perfect for a rainy afternoon.
Have a spa afternoon
Our Jacuzzi hot tub is the perfect antidote to tired legs after a long coastal walk. And from September Nook and Cranny will have their own private hot tubs too! We can arrange treatments in your rooms too, but make sure you book before you arrive.
